HC#40 – Romans 6:15-23

The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.  An encouraging verse for all who understand that they are sinners.  Notice that Paul starts that section off reminding us that there really are only two choices: slaves to sin or slaves to Christ.  And then in verse 17 he immediately acknowledges his slavery to sin and how he was set free from that slavery.  It is the way we are all set free from slavery to sin: the death of Jesus Christ.  The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  That is how we move from slavery to sin over to slavery to righteousness or slavery to God.  It is only through the completed work of Jesus Christ.  Without that we are still in our sins, and the end of that is death: eternal death.

And take note again that this is a gift.  Jesus Christ, His life and death, are a gift from God.  That is not earned, not repaid, and not done on account of anything that is within us.  Verse 21 lets us know that the fruit of what is within us is not eternal life.  The end of those things is death.  That is what is within us.  Our wage is death.  Our payment.  Our reward for all that we have done.  We earn death because of our sin.  Because of every one of our sins in fact.  Jesus willing came to die for us while we were yet sinners, and His death has given us eternal life.  This is why Christ had to die.

See yourselves now as freed from sin and slaves to righteousness.  Slaves to Jesus Christ, your Lord.  Ask God to help you follow after your Lord faithfully and willingly, and leave behind the ways of sin that lead only unto death.  Amen.
